Alternatively, players can capture Thestrals out in the wild and care for them in the Vivarium. In Hogwarts Legacy, Thestrals can be used as a flying mount in place of, but only if players on the Dark Arts Pack DLC. They are known for pulling the carriages that take students to Hogwarts, though many who have not witnessed death for themselves cannot see Thestrals, so they believe the carriages pull themselves.
